Pedagogical framework Description & Objectives

Work Package 3 (WP3) of the ViReal4STEM project is dedicated to the development of a comprehensive pedagogical framework aimed at promoting gender inclusivity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. The initiative responds to persistent gender disparities in STEM fields and seeks to support secondary school teachers in delivering inclusive, equitable, and inspiring STEM education for all learners, regardless of gender or background.

Led by the University of Jyväskylä (JYU), WP3 brings together the expertise of seven European partners, leveraging their collective experience in STEM education, pedagogical innovation, and gender-inclusiveness to co-create practical tools and strategies for classroom application.

WP3 advances the core goals of the ViReal4STEM project by focusing on three main objectives:

Develop...a robust, evidence-based pedagogical framework for gender-inclusive STEM education, integrating existing STEM resources with adaptation strategies to foster inclusivity, emotional intelligence, and diversity awareness.

Empower...teachers with actionable guidance for adapting and delivering STEM content inclusively, ensuring accessibility and engagement across all genders.

Ensure...accessibility and usability of the framework through clear instructions, multilingual translations, and practical examples tailored for classroom use.

Measurable Impact

Qualitative indicators

Qualitative indicators focus on relevance, comprehensiveness, transferability, and user-friendliness, as evaluated by secondary school educators across partner countries.

Quantitative indicators

Quantitative indicators include timely delivery, number of languages translated, clarity and structure of the framework, and expert participation in validation.

Compilation of STEM Resources

Partners will gather and assess existing STEM teaching materials in their respective countries, identifying content through a gender lens using proven assessment tools.

Development of the Pedagogical Framework

Based on data analysis, student input, and literature review, the project will develop the initial version of the pedagogical framework incorporating gender-inclusive strategies.

Validation of the Framework

Focus groups with 12 STEM teachers from Spain, Finland, Greece, and Croatia will review the framework’s practicality and relevance, ensuring it meets real-world classroom needs.

Adaptation and Finalization

Feedback from the validation phase will be used to refine the framework, enhancing clarity, effectiveness, and applicability across diverse educational contexts.

Translation and Dissemination

The finalized framework will be available in English, Spanish, Greek, Croatian, and Polish, making it broadly accessible across Europe.

Expected Results

The cornerstone output of WP3 is Deliverable D3.1 – the Pedagogical Framework for Gender-Inclusive STEM Education.

This deliverable will include:
  • A curated collection of STEM teaching resources.
  • Pedagogical principles rooted in gender-inclusive education.
  • Practical, discipline-specific adaptation guidelines with examples for science, technology, and mathematics subjects.
The framework will be a powerful tool for teachers seeking to foster more equitable STEM classrooms. By encouraging inclusive teaching approaches, WP3 aims to inspire greater participation and achievement among female students and contribute to a more diverse STEM landscape across Europe.
